The Indiana Pacers are shifting into another gear

The 4th seeded Indiana Pacers have advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, taking out the top seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in five games, closing out the series with a 114-105 victory on Tuesday, May 13th. Power forward Pascal Siakam (pictured above to the right) had a strong performance with 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block while guard Tyrese Haliburton led the way with 31 points, six rebounds, eight assists, one block, and one steal. Small forward Aaron Nesmith also had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Just an all-around great team victory. 

The 4-1 series victory over the Cavaliers comes after a 4-1 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round, making the Pacers 8-2 so far in the playoffs. Haliburton is leading the league in assists per game this postseason with 9.3 to go along with his 17.5 points per game while center Myles Turner's 2.5 blocks per game is leading the league in the postseason as well. Turner is putting in 16.5 points and grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game, so he's playing fantastic. When you have the NBA's top assist guy and top shot blocker on your team, you're going to be tough to stop.

During the playoffs, the Pacers are averaging 117.7 points per game while their opponents are averaging 112.2 points per game. That's an average margin of victory of +5.5, which is pretty solid. Especially when you consider they took out the top seed. Their three largest margins of victory have been a 117-98 (+19) home victory over the Bucks in game one, a 129-103 (+26) road victory over the Bucks in game four, and a 129-109 (+20) home victory over the Cavaliers in game four. Those are dominant wins. They also have a pair of one point victories over both teams, one of which came in overtime. So they've shown they can win close games as well. 

Looking ahead to the Eastern Conference Finals, whether it's the Knicks or Celtics that they play, the Pacers should be feeling confident right now. They've taken out the top seed in the East in the Cavaliers and a Milwaukee Bucks team that isn't that far removed from a championship. They're also getting a chance to rest up while the Knicks and Celtics still finish their series with game six coming up on Friday. Honestly, I don't think it's at all crazy to have the Pacers favored. They seem to be shifting into another gear and so far nobody has figured out how to slow them down.

Wednesday Windmill: Are the Indiana Pacers a healthy Victor Oladipo away from winning the East?

On Tuesday, the Indiana Pacers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 105-102 at home, improving to 19-9 overall and 6th in the Eastern Conference. As has been a staple of theirs over the years, the Pacers have a pretty balanced scoring attack with five players scoring in double figures: Malcolm Brogdon (19.1 points per game), T.J. Warren (17.8 points per game), Domantas Sabonis (17.7 points per game), Jeremy Lamb (14.6 points per game), and Myles Turner (11.1 points per game). When you have so many different weapons, you're a very difficult team to stop both at home and on the road.

That all said, the Pacers appear to be lacking at least one additional weapon, which is where Victor Oladipo comes in. Oladipo hasn't played all season due to a knee injury and it remains unclear when he'll return. His absence is nothing small as he averaged 18.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game last season. He's their best player on paper.

The good news for the Pacers is that so far at least, they're playing really well without him. They're on pace to make the playoffs and are keeping themselves within striking distance of a top four seed in the East for when he returns. Assuming he does return this season and is able to play like his regular self, this Pacers team just might make a run at the Eastern Conference crown.

What makes Oladipo so good is that he's a complete two-way player. It's not just the points. It's the rebounding, the assists, and the steals. He does a little bit of everything and knows how to get it done on both ends of the floor. Guys like him are invaluable and truly make a difference on their teams. He's the kind of player every coach wishes that they had.

When talking about which teams could come out of the East this year, don't sleep on the Pacers. They're already one of the better teams in the league and are still awaiting the return of their best player. That should have everyone in the East on notice.

Wednesday Windmill: Just how dangerous are the Indiana Pacers?

One team that seems to be flying under the radar is the red-hot Indiana Pacers, winners of 5 straight games and 8 of their last 10. Led by Victor Oladipo (19.6 points), the Pacers currently have a 25-12 record, putting them just two games back of the top seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference. In an Eastern Conference that is wide open, this Pacers team needs to be taken seriously as a legitimate contender to reach the NBA Finals.

What makes the Pacers so dangerous is their depth. While Oladipo is their feature player, he has plenty of help around him in guys like Bojan Bogdanovic (16.2 points on 45.7% shooting from 3-point range), Domantas Sabonis (14.6 points & 9.6 rebounds), Myles Turner (13.1 points & 7.3 rebounds), Thaddeus Young (12.1 points & 5.8 rebounds), and Tyreke Evans  (10.5 points). With this depth, the Pacers have the shooters to keep perimeter defenders on their toes and the size up front to bang down low.

The biggest question with this team is whether or not they have a legitimate go-to player in the clutch. It's one thing to have guys who you can go to in the regular season, but it's another to have a guy who you can count on to make a key play in the playoffs. When you look at the rest of the Eastern Conference contenders, it's clear who the go-to players are. The Bucks have Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Raptors have Kawhi Leonard, the 76ers have Joel Embiid, and the Celtics have Kyrie Irving. While the Pacers can say they have Oladipo, I wouldn't put him in the same league as those other players. At least not yet.

If Oladipo can prove his worth as a legitimate franchise player and show that he's not afraid to step up in the playoffs, then the Pacers have a real chance to go the distance. They have the depth and the versatility to do so. As an added bonus, they have a killer fan base that comes out in droves to support their Pacers come playoff time.

At the moment, I'm not yet sure who to pick to win the Eastern Conference title given that the 76ers and Celtics are underperforming and the Bucks and Raptors are yet to prove they can go deep in the playoffs. With that in mind, I don't see why the Pacers should be excluded from the discussion. They're playing great basketball and have all the pieces to be a nightmare matchup for whoever they face in the playoffs. It's been a while since the Pacers were in the NBA Finals, but I have a feeling this just might be the year that they finally get back.

Skyhook Sunday: The Indiana Pacers are starting to find their groove

One of the hottest teams in the NBA is the Indiana Pacers, who have won five straight games with wins over the Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, and New York Knicks. At 20-18 the Pacers find themselves in the 5th spot in the Eastern Conference and right in the mix to get home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The man who is primarily responsible for this five game winning streak is none other than Paul George, who is averaging 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game on the season. He's had two 30+ point games during this five game winning streak and nothing less than 19 points in any of the games. He's flat out balling right now and the Pacers are winning games as a result.

If there's one other player who deserves credit for the Pacers' new found success, it's their center Myles Turner, who is in his second year out of Texas. Turner is averaging 15.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, going off for 25 points and 15 rebounds against the Nets and 23 points and 12 rebounds against the Magic. Myles Turner is stepping up and playing big down low, which is huge given the ups and downs of Al Jefferson. "Big Al" was supposed to be the guy who provided consistent post presence down low for the Pacers, but instead it has been Myles Turner.

What's scary about this Pacers team is that in addition to Paul George and Myles Turner, they have other quality pieces like Al Jefferson, Jeff Teague, and Monta Ellis. Even C.J. Miles can get the hot hand from time to time. This Pacers team has a lot of talent and weapons that they can go to. It's just a matter of everybody getting on the same page and playing consistently. Right now, the only consistent players on this Pacers team are Paul George and Myles Turner. If the Pacers want to win a series and actually do some damage in the playoffs, guys like Al Jefferson, Jeff Teague, and Monta Ellis are going to have to step up and provide more consistent production.

The good new for the Pacers is that it's early in the season and they still have plenty of time to put it all together. If this team continues to get better and find their groove, they could be a team to watch out for in the Eastern Conference playoffs. I'm not saying they're championship contenders, but they could give the Cleveland  Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors a scare given the right conditions. It's just a matter of getting all the parts to work together.
